1ST GRADE LEADers - CONTRIBUTION

Authentic Research on Charging iPads in the 1st Grade

This was the concluding activity of our Authentic Research Unit. Students went into the three First Grade classrooms and surveyed students on what percentage each iPad was charged. They surveyed 60 students including themselves. We compiled the data from each classroom. I put the numbers into a graph, and the students then came up with an observation, question, or AHA about the results. You can see both below.

2ND GRADE LEADERS - SYSTEMS

Second Graders have been learning about simple machines and how they make work easier and life overall better. Below are pictures of students building different types of simple machines. Lastly, students researched one type of simple machine using the Depth and Complexity icons.

3RD GRADE - POWER

Third Grade LEADers have been working on their 3D Creations and Alliteration Stories. Each student received the same craft supplies, and then brainstormed several ideas to create. After evaluating and choosing the best idea, students then created their 3D Creations. After that, students learned about Alliteration from the book Some Smug Slug, and they began writing their own alliteration stories. The students them uploaded various pics and screenshots of their stories into a Google Slides. This may have been the first time your child has created a Google Slides. You can see your child's slides in their Google Drive, GT LEAD folder.

Below are students doing a Think, Write Pair, Share Activity.

4TH GRADE - EXPLORATIONS

Fourth Grade Leaders have been reflecting on cause and effect relationships. We used yarn to think through cause and effects of forgetting to bring one's chromebook to school. Students have been learning about oxymorons, and the title of this activity is My Favorite Mistake. We questioned how someone can have a favorite mistake and concluded that it would be because of the valuable lesson learned. We read a book called Beautiful Oops!, and one fourth grader summed it up by saying, "Mistakes are Opportunities."

Students brainstormed their list of mistakes and lessons learned. Then, each student chose one mistake to write about. It was important to include at the ending of the story the BIG LESSON learned, such as time management, responsibility, listening to parents, obeying parents, and forgetting things. There were two extra challenges in this. One was to connect the lesson-learned to the future, such as the next grade, middle school, driving in high school, and/or even future careers. Each student then had to write an acrostic poem about the story. The second challenge was to choose to write the Double Acrostic. We had a few students choose this.

Lastly, students put all of this into a Google Slides, and then, they uploaded it to Seesaw and recorded on each slide. You can see your child's Favorite Mistake in Seesaw or in their Google Drive, GT LEAD folder.

5TH GRADE - CHANGE

So Proud of our 2021-22 Spelling Bee Contestants!

5th Graders below are participating in a Think, Write, Pair, Share. These past few weeks 5th Graders have been learning about patterns in nature and mathematics by discovering the Fibonacci number sequence, tessellations, and fractals. Students also chose different Kaplan Depth and Complexity icons to analyze a short holiday film called, Hey Deer!

I am so fortunate to call O.C. Taylor my home, and like our mascot, the Tiger, we ARE creative, resourceful, and resilient. The definition of RESILIENCY is “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” Whether it be digital or in person, my goal is to provide opportunities that develop a student’s capacity to trouble- shoot, problem-solve, reflect, be creative, and look at situations from multiple perspectives. My own children are GCISD graduates and have benefited greatly from the rigor of advanced academics, leadership opportunities, and programs that have met their needs socially/emotionally. Likewise, I am committed to connecting students and families with programs and services that are unique to GCISD. In a nutshell, my WHY of teaching is … “It’s all about the kids!”
