When you are working with your child on letter and number recognition, it's important to make it fun and engaging. While flash cards do have their place, it is more meaningful for children to interact with letters in more than a visual way. Here are some ideas for making letter work fun. You can do similar activities with numbers and sets!

  1. Write upper and lower case letters on dried lima beans for your child to match. Have your child make his/her name, or spell out family member names, or little words.

  2. Write upper and lower case letters on sticky notes to hide around the house for your child to find and match. Ask your child to sort letters by straight lines/curves/both, upper/lower case, letters in your child's name, put them in ABC order and sing the alphabet.

  3. Make a sensory tray from a cookie sheet with sides. Add salt, flour, or shaving cream and have your child write letters using a finger, Qtip, or paintbrush.

  4. Bend letters with pipe cleaners (chenille stems, available at craft stores).

  5. Make sensory ABC bags. Add some oatmeal, beans, or dry pasta to a gallon zip top bag and insert letters written on paper scraps, scrabble letters, or plastic letters and zip it shut.. Have your child shake, manipulate, and squeeze the bag to find letters, and write them on a piece of paper until all letters have been found.

  6. Invisible letters: write letters on a white piece of paper with a white crayon. Have your child watercolor paint the paper to make the letters appear.

  7. Make name puzzles. Write your child's name on construction paper and cut the letters apart. Have your child rebuild his/her name.
