This Week in 5th Grade!

October 25 - 29, 2021

Math

This week in math, we will begin the week with a long division review from fourth grade and learn about dividing with a two digit divisor. The students will have an independent practice and fact fluency sheet to complete before Thursday.

On Thursday, we will learn about personal financial literacy to gear up for our 1st 5th grade Auction on Friday 10/29. The students will learn how to write and fill out a check, learn the advantages and disadvantages of different types of payments, and learn about keeping up with a financial record. We will use these skills on Friday for our Auction. Thank you again for all of your donations. Follow my twitter account to get picture updates from that day @OCTEpperson.

REPEAT INFORMATION: Students will have a fast fact multiplication sheet and an independent practice that'll be graded this week. They will also have homework in Canvas this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

This unit proves to be a difficult unit for 5th grade as we are getting into the multistep problem solving. It's important for students to take their time with their work, check their answers for reasonableness, and ASK QUESTIONS!

It's very important for 5th graders to continue their fast fact practice with all operations. This will really help them be successful in this unit.

Science & Social Studies

This week in SCIENCE, we will explore the differences between inherited traits and learned behaviors along with kicking off our study of the impacts of environmental changes.

Our dioramas were AMAZING! I am so unbelievably proud of our 5th graders!

Check these out!

Video 1, Video 2, and one picture because it was fragile and I didn't want it in the hall! :)

This week in SOCIAL STUDIES, we will continue studying the 13 Original Colonies and students will apply what they have learned about the New England, middle, and southern colonies into a group project completed here at school to show what they know!

Reading/ Writing

This week we will continue our book club book schedule, with our book club meetings on Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure your child has read up to their number of pages and their jobs are complete for each meeting.

Students have been given a calendar of dates (posted in Canvas) that tells them how many pages they need to read for each book club meeting. This also tells them the job that they will have to do. The jobs are also posted in Canvas. **Students are always allowed to take their book home and read and work on their jobs at night**

Our 2nd book talk will be due Dec. 10. This book talk will be told from the main character's point of view. The rubric will be the same as last time, and is still posted in Canvas.

Students will have Poetry Week 8 due on Friday.

We will be writing school appropriate scary stories this week. On Friday, we will share our stories out loud in class. **Have students bring flashlights to school on Friday!!

Students received new spelling words last Monday in class. They will need to complete their spelling activity (posted in canvas) by Friday Oct. 29. Their spelling test will be Thursday Oct. 28.
