This Week in 5th Grade!

October 11 - 15, 2021

Math

THANK YOU!! I am blown away by the amount of donations I've r

This week in math, we will begin with a pre-assessment on Tuesday over long division and multi-digit multiplication. This will not be for a grade but will test their prior knowledge on these concepts. We will practice these computational skills throughout the week when we have time.

We will not have JAMS this week as we have CoGAT, PIRLS (Fiffik & Epperson only), and a half day on Wednesday. To begin preparing for this unit, your child should be practicing their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts nightly for 10 minutes.

They will receive homework this week through Canvas on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday that will spiral back on 4th grade multiplication and division word problems and computational skills. Please make sure your child is completing their homework each week so they earn the $100 Homework Money Bonus to use on our Auction coming up on the 29th.

Science & Social Studies

This week in Science, we will not be covering any new content! Because of schedules and time constraints, what little class time we have will be spent reviewing material we have covered so far, working through diorama research, and reviewing Social Studies content covered so far.

Students should be working on their dioramas and research slides at home as well!

Students have selected their habitat and one animal within that habitat to explore. Students are working on BOTH a presentation and a diorama project for their grade.

The majority of the work for this project occurs at home. Click here for more info!

FINAL PROJECTS ARE DUE AND PRESENTED ON THURSDAY, OCT 21st!

This week in Social Studies, we will review already covered content and give students time to clear up anything they might need extra time with. Our next unit will cover the Thirteen Original Colonies.

Reading/ Writing

1st 9 weeks TEKS check

Thursday 10/14

Tuesday we will be sharing out first book talks in class. Be sure to look over the rubric to make sure you are including everything you need, and that your presentation meets the time limit requirements. The rubric is posted in Canvas. If we do not finish today, we will finish tomorrow.

Wednesday we have early dismissal. We will be taking our first 2 CoGat tests on Wednesday. We will also finish any book talks from Tuesday that we did not get to.

Students have been given a calendar of dates (posted in Canvas) that tells them how many pages they need to read for each book club meeting. This also tells them the job that they will have to do. The jobs are also posted in Canvas. We will have our book club meeting on Thursday ,so students need to be sure to have pages read and jobs done. **Students are always allowed to take their book home and read and work on their jobs at night**

We will be going to the library this Tuesday during class! If your child has books that need to be returned or renewed (like their book talk book) please remind them to put them in their backpacks

Students will NOT have poetry this week due to the shortened week we have!!

In writing, we are continuing to work on writing our own personal narratives. We are including a small moment in time, emotions in our hook and throughout our story, as well as remembering to capitalize words correctly (like we are continuing to discuss in our Patterns of Power grammar work). We are working on writing good endings, writing with strong verbs and specific nouns and using good transition words. Narratives will be due Oct. 22.

Students received new spelling words last Monday in class. They will need to complete their spelling activity (posted in canvas) by this Friday Oct. 15. Their spelling test will be this Thursday Oct. 14.
