This Week in 5th Grade!

September 27 - October 1, 2021

Math

This week in math, we will continue our learning with place value, specifically rounding to the hundredths and tenths place, and estimation.

Unit 1 & 2 Math Test 10/7

Our first math test will be on Thursday October 7th. This test will be on Edugence (digital). Students will be required to show their work for their problems and justify their answers in words. This helps students to slow down and think about the reasonableness of their answer choice. We will review for the test Monday-Wednesday in class. Students will receive a review packet for homework this week that will be turned in before the test.

The concepts that will be on this test will be:

  • Coordinate Plane Vocabulary

  • Plotting/naming ordered pairs

  • Plotting/naming ordered pairs from a table

  • Place value of whole numbers to the billions and decimals to the thousandths place

  • Forms of numbers to the billions and thousandths place

  • Rounding and Estimation

  • Comparing and Ordering Decimals

Test corrections and Extension will be that Friday for students that passed/failed the test. If students get below a 70 on their test, they will make corrections with me in a small group to go over the misconceptions from the test.

Repeat Information: Our first auction with be October 29th! This was one of the main reasons for earning money in 5th grade. So many students are already so excited for this day! We will take class time to learn how to write a check, deposit slips and how to keep a financial record.

Science & Social Studies

This week in Science, we will be kicking off unit 4! This covers structures and functions in both plants and animals. We will study how different parts of plants and animals help them adapt to their environments and help the organism survive.

We are kicking off our DIORAMA projects!

Students will select one habitat and one animal within that habitat to explore. Students will complete BOTH a presentation and a diorama project for their grade. The majority of the work for this project occurs at home.

Reading/ Writing

This week in Reading, we will be finishing our class novel called Walk Two Moons.. We will continue reading most of this together in class and students will also be reading some on their own. We will be focusing on setting, characters/traits, sequence of events, main idea, as well theme and inferences this week. **Students are always allowed to borrow a book from me at the end of the day to take home and get caught if they need**

We will have our final Walk Two Moons quiz this week over chapters 23-44. They are allowed to use their notes and book for the quiz.

Students will also be working on their week 5 poetry assignment. This is posted in Canvas and due on Friday.

If your child has books that need to be returned or renewed (like their book talk book) please remind them to put them in their backpacks

. This is a reminder that the 1st book talk assignment will be due on Oct. 8!! The rubric for this is posted in Canvas.

In writing, we are continuing to work on writing our own personal narratives. We are including a small moment in time, emotions in our hook and throughout our story, as well as remembering to capitalize words correctly (like we are continuing to discuss in our Patterns of Power grammar work). We are also working on writing good endings to our writing. We have 4 different strategies that students can use to end a story strong.

Students received new spelling words last Tuesday in class. They will need to complete 2 spelling activities (posted in canvas) by this Friday Oct. 1. Their spelling test will be this Thursday Sept. 30
