Testing for GT Services and/or the ASPIRE Academy

Kindergarten through 5th Grade currently enrolled students may be referred and tested for GT services and/or the ASPIRE Academy during the window below:

Referral Window: January 10 - January 28

Testing Window: February 1 - February 28

GT Decision mailed on: March 28

ASPIRE Decision mailed on: April 27

Please be sure to check your child's GREAT Tiger folder nightly. We send notes, graded papers, and homework via this folder. You can take the papers out of it nightly. Also, please initial in the day's box that you have seen their GREAT Tiger folder each night.

Reading:

This week we have been working on the following:

  • identify organizational patterns such as cause and effect and problem and solution

  • identify key words to help determine the cause or effect in a relationship, such as "so, therefore, as a result, because."

When we return from winter break, we will:

  • review using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and multiple-meaning words

  • Library Day on January 6th-Remember to have your library books on that day so you can check out 3 new books




Math:

This week we have been working on the following:

Division

  • We took our Unit 3 District Assessment over Multiplication and Division Basics.

  • We worked on word problems and how to look for what they are asking us to do.

  • We took our 5's multiplication test this week. (or 2's, 3's, or 4's , if we haven't mastered those levels yet.)

  • We worked on IXL and Education Galaxy assignments and fact fluency on both SplashLearn and MobyMax.

Next, week's focus:

  • Increasing our fluency with our Fun Facts beginning with a review of our 0-5 multiplication facts

  • Solve one and two step word problems using different strategies to represent multiplication & and division.

(arrays, strip diagrams, equations)



Science:

In science we are starting our Forms of Energy unit.

Our Main Points to learn from this Unit:


  • Energy appears in different forms.

  • Energy is useful in our everyday lives.

  • Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can change from one form to another.

Grammar:

This week's focus phrase:

Use commas to separate ideas in a series.



Writing:

Next week's focus

  • Writing New Year Goals for different areas of their lives (both for school and out of school)

  • Informational Text

  • Students will work on a draft of their informational text

  • Students will continue to include text features such as Table of Contents, Glossary, Diagrams, Illustration with caption, etc. for their final informational writing.


Spelling:

Students will be introduced to prefixes, such as im-/dis-/in-/non-/pre-

We will spend this week learning the meanings of the prefixes and brainstorming words with theses prefixes. Students will take a pre-test on Thursday to determine which list of words they will receive for the test the next week.

The spelling list will come home with your child on Monday, January 10th.
