Thank you for coming to Curriculum Night on Tuesday! It was good to see so many of you online with us. If you missed it, here is the link of the information we shared. Also, we emailed the slide show to you on Tuesday morning.

Important Dates to Remember:
September 6: Labor Day~ No School

September 7: GT begins with Mrs. Griffin

September 15: International Dot Day

September 16: Rock Out ~ 6:00-8:00 pm

September 20: No School

Reading:

This week we have been working on the following:

  • Identifying inner and outer traits of characters from the book Those Darn Squirrels by Adam Rubin

  • Inferring and making predictions

  • Providing text evidence to support our responses

  • DRA's (Developmental Reading Assessment)

teachers are assessing each student to determine his/her independent reading level

Next week we will:

  • Take a pre-assessment for Unit 1: re-telling; predicting; inferring; and identifying story elements

  • Making Inferrences and predictions

  • Identifying story elements: main character, setting, problem, plot, conclusion

  • Teachers will continue to assess reading levels using DRA (Developmental Reading Inventory)


Math:

This week's focus :

  • Place Value Pretest

Next, week's focus:

  • Begin our full rotations of Math Workshop

  • Decomposing and the Place and Value of a Number



Science:

In science we are working on Classifying Matter.

Main Points to Know:

  • Matter has physical properties including temperature, mass, magnetism and ability to sink or float.

  • We can measure and record the physical properties of matter.

  • We can classify matter as a solid, liquid or gas based on its physical properties.




Grammar:

This week's focus

  • Plural nouns to show more than one person, place, or thing.


Writing:

This week's focus

  • Writing a "small moment" in time story.


Spelling

We almost have everyone's check for this wonderful learning opportunity. If you have not sent it yet, please do as soon as you can. The magazines should be here very soon!

We are so excited about using Scholastic News and Science Spin this year! Our Tigers will get to read kid-friendly current events. They will be reading engaging informational stories on the 3rd grade level. Please send a check payable to Scholastic News for $8.48 as soon as possible. These newspapers will arrive soon and will keep coming weekly all year long. Yay! It will be one or your child's favorite things to read and share with you.






WISH LISTS

Thank you so much for coming to Curriculum Night!

Two of our biggest needs right now are

  1. Heavy sheet protectors. We are making goal folders for each child for math, reading, spelling, writing, and science. They will share these folders with you later in the year for their Student Led Conferences.

  2. Post -it Notes :. Your child will be jotting down ideas and responses to what they are reading. We will go through A LOT of post- its this year!
