2021-2022 School-wide System

We believe the school community, including students, parents, faculty, and staff must work together to provide a safe and supportive environment that promotes teaching and learning. We have clear guidelines for academic and behavioral excellence and use discipline in a positive, supportive, logical, and consistent manner.

All students in grades PreK-5 will learn and meet GREAT Tiger expectations each day. These include in all classrooms, specials, lunch, recess, hallways, restrooms, Learning Commons, and all other campus locations.

What is a GREAT Tiger ?

At O. C. Taylor, we think our Tigers are GREAT!!

Growth- Minded Tigers set personal learning goals, display a growth-mindset, accept instructional feedback from teachers and peers, and are always ready to try their BEST!

Responsible Tigers are prepared with necessary materials and tools, including devices, to learn, take responsibility for their actions, and focus on assignments and turn in work in a timely manner.

Extra Respectful Tigers listen to others, help their peers and teachers when needed, and obey all school rules, including in the classrooms, specials, cafeteria, Learning Commons, playground, and all other campus locations.

Tigers are Always Kind as they use polite and courteous manners (thank you, yes ma'am/sir, and please), show empathy to others in all situations, and display a caring heart to all around them.

Tigers Take Pride in their learning environment and community by keeping their personal and common area(s) clean, taking care of all school property, and show their Tiger Pride at all times.

GREAT Folders & Charts

Every Tiger (PreK-5) will have a GREAT Folder. Our goal is to create consistent communication between school and home. The folder will also include any work from the previous day(s), important notes, and any needed information that will go home.

Here are five simple tips to help you and your child in using this daily folder:

G oes home DAILY for parent review and signature

R eflect on personal behavior and choices

E very student

A ttributes for both positives & consequences

T ake to all content classes

Please help your child remember to return his or her folder to school each day.

Each folder will include a GREAT chart for the nine weeks period. It includes important instructional dates, such as the First Day of School and Progress Reports. During these first few weeks of school, we will model and practice all of our GREAT Tiger expectations in all classes and locations on campus. We will focus on both positive reinforcement of GREAT behavior, as well as talk about the consequences if expectations are not met.

Please make time each evening to review your child's day, learning, and any behavior(s) that occurred. Talk with your child about how they can learn from this to make better choices or interact with others in a more positive way. Everyday is a new day!! Finally, parents need to initial /sign in the corresponding box nightly.

Each GREAT Chart includes a number code to help in identifying any challenging behaviors that your child may have had on that particular day. After being provided with verbal warnings, the teacher will write the corresponding number(s) in the dated box. If necessary, the teacher may also accompany this with a detailed message for you regarding your child's actions. We expect our older Tigers to communicate their actions to their parent(s). If repeated or severe behaviors occur, you will receive a phone call from either your child's teacher, the Counselor, Stacy Whisman, or the Campus Behavior Coordinator, Allison Bailey.

When your Tiger has a GREAT day, you will see a positive mark, such as a stamp, sticker, etc. :)

Voice Levels

Voice Levels are modeled and practiced each and every day. We want our Tigers to communicate using different voice levels for unique purposes while speaking, working or collaborating with others, and quietly talking if teachers are working with small groups or individual students. Voice Level 0 will be enforced when students are taking tests or formative assessments. We highly encourage students to use their Outside Voice Level 4 when they are outside at recess or other outdoor events.

GREAT Slips & Reflection Sheets

If a student has difficulty in another location or class (specials, special program class, Learning Commons, or the cafeteria), it is the responsibility of the teacher or staff member on duty to address the situation and complete a GREAT Slip that includes the location where and the behavior(s) that occurred. The teacher or staff on duty will communicate this to the homeroom teacher. This slip will go home in the GREAT Folder to notify parent(s)/guardian(s) of the behavior(s) that occur outside of class.

Specials teachers will also use this as a tool to document the number of infractions to the campus conduct code during their class time and determine their conduct grade (E, S, N, or U) accordingly.

As students gain more independence and responsibility in reflecting upon their actions, the GREAT Reflection Sheet may be used for students to think about their personal behavior and choices. After discussing with their teacher, the student will reflect upon and write about better choices that they can make in the future if specific situations arise. This is a critical component of a child being able to truly understand how their actions impact their learning and others around them. This is such a positive tool for our Tigers to utilize as they strive to learn from their mistakes and make better choices tomorrow!
