This Week in 5th Grade!

January 10 - January 14, 2022

Math

This week in math, we will focus on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. We really focused on simplifying fractions and creating mixed numbers to give the students a good foundation. We will have two graded assignments this week over adding and subtracting fractions.

The district just bought a new app for the students to use for fact fluency and foundations of fractions. I will use this for homework this week. The app is called Reflex/Frax Math and it's in Classlink. I will give each student their unique log in on Monday so that they can practice for 10 minutes a night. There will be no homework in Canvas until we finish our frax foundations.

If your child is looking for more fraction practice, IXL is a fantastic resource that has word problems, models, and computation. They can access their IXL through Classlink.

Science & Social Studies

Welcome to our first full week of the spring semester!

This week in Science, we will study both weather and climate. Students will learn how to read weather maps and interpret forecasts as well as analyze patterns over long periods of time. Daily STEMScopes assignments will resume this week.

In Social Studies, we have now completed our study of the American Revolution. Now we begin our 6th unit where we will explore the development of America's new government.

This is our unit for the entire month of January and we will heavily focus on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and how those documents and processes work for the people and adapt over time to meet the country's needs.

Reading/ Writing

This week we will welcome back Ms. Pruitt!! She will be with us every day for the next 8 weeks and we are so excited to have her back!

We will begin our unit on argumentative stories and writing. Students will be choosing a topic from a list that they want to be researching. Students will be choosing a particular side of that topic to be writing about as well. This unit will take us multiple weeks to complete. This week our main focus is just the introduction of this unit and students will choose their topic.

Students will have new spelling words this week based on their Spelling assessment from last week. They will have 1 activity due by next Thursday the 20th. Their spelling test will also be next Thursday the 20th.

Students will have poetry week 13 due this Friday.

We will be going to the library on Tuesday this week. Students will be checking out a book for their next book talk.

Book Talk #3 will be due on Feb. 25th. This book talk will be told from a minor character's point of view.
