GT Testing started Tuesday, February 1st and will continue this week. Your child may be pulled for testing for approximately 45 minutes each day this week.

Please be sure to check your child's GREAT Tiger folder nightly. We send notes, graded papers, and homework via this folder. You can take the papers out of it nightly. Also, please initial in the day's box that you have seen their GREAT Tiger folder each night.

Parents.....

You are invited to come up and visit your child during our recess on Friday, February 11. It is from 11:10-11:40. Your teacher will be reaching out to you next week with the details. If you will be attending, you must complete this Fastpass Visitor Form. If you do not complete the form, you will be required to come into the building with your driver's license to sign in to the Raptor system.

.....if they have a working pair of headphones or earbuds. They need them for:

  • Tests and activities on line that they need to "hear" what is being read or said to them or asked of them.

  • Music Class

  • Art Class

  • Reading and Math assignments

  • Practice for STAAR requires headphones.

There are a lot of 3rd graders without a pair of headphones or without a pair of headphones that work. We thank you SO much for sending them with a pair of headphones on Monday. :)

GCISD Contest using Reflex Math

When?: February 1st through February 28

Who?: All 2nd -5th grade students in GCISD

How?: Just login to Reflex and enjoy solving math facts until your child gets the "green light". However, they can work pass the green light status.

Valentine's Day Party

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Our party will take place on Friday, February 11. This year our Tigers will be able to exchange their Valentine cards with each other! Your child can bring his/her decorated valentine box to school beginning on Monday, February 7-11. Please make sure your child’s name is clearly visible on the front/top of the box. Our Tigers will be delivering their Valentines on February 11 prior to the class party. If your child is delivering valentines, please have him/her make a valentine for everyone in their homeroom. We do not want any hurt feelings on a "friend" holiday. A list of names was sent home in your child's Great Tiger folder on Thursday or Friday, January 27 & 28.

Reading:

This week we have been working on the following:

  • We practiced annotating text to better understand what we are reading by using L.A.T.C.H.

Next week, we will:

  • continue to practice annotating text for comprehension using L.A.T.C.H. I am so proud of the progress we are making. My students are Awesome!!!!

  • Continue our whole-group novel study of The Cricket in Times Square. We are all enjoying talking about story plot. Ask your child what has happened so far?

  • BOOK CLUBS: Students are to have read the pages assigned in their book club book issued to them last Monday and a completed reading log ready to turn in on Friday, Feb. 11th. This week, they will meet with their groups to have discussions and respond to literature and share opinions and insight over what they have read so far.






Math:

This week we have been working on the following

  • We reviewed Rounding with Number Lines in Education Galaxy.

  • We practiced on both division and multiplication math facts.

  • We recognized that fractions have to have equal parts.

  • We practiced comparing fractions to find the larger one.

Next, week's focus will be:

  • Participating in the District wide contest using Reflex Math in hopes to win a Cookie Party!

  • Continue to work with word problems & using the UPS√ & CUBES strategies

  • We will learn about fractions on a number line and how to create and read them.

  • We will learn how 2 shapes that are the same size can be divided differently, but the area stays the same.

  • Continue to work on math fluency with Splash Math, MobyMax, & Reflex Math.

  • Last week's Homework will be due on February 11.

  • This week's homework is to work on Reflex, MobyMax, or Education Galaxy's Study Plan for 15 minutes each night.



Science:

In science we are in our Magnetism and Gravity unit.

Our Main Points to learn from this Unit:


  • Gravity is a force that can move objects by pulling them toward each other.

  • Magnetism is a force that can move objects by attracting them together or repelling them apart.

  • Forces, including gravity and magnetism, can have observable effects on objects.


Grammar:

This week's focus phrase:

We will keep the same focus phrase as last week due to the inclement weather schedule change.

I can use adjectives with the verbs of being

*We will practice identifying parts of speech within a sentence: nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs



Writing:


  • Students are working on concepts of persuasive writing.

  • Students will be learning about speeches, editorials, persuasive letters, etc. We will be conferring together and help each other grow in our writing capabilities!


Spelling:

Students will practice how to spell words that follow the "Changing Rule" -change -y to "i" and ad -es

ex. candy------ candies

bunny----bunnies

Students will recieve their spelling list on Monday, Feb. 7th. They will practice their spelling words in class throughout the week. However, your child may want to review/practice his/her list at home as well. We will have the test on Friday, Feb. 11th.
