This Week in 5th Grade!

October 18 - 22, 2021

Math

Thank you again for all of your donations to our 5th grade Auction on 10/29. We're all looking forward to it!

This week in math, we will begin our JAMS (math rotations) again. We are starting Unit 3 over multiplication, long division, and prime and composite numbers.

We will begin this week with multiplication and reviewing the steps for the Standard Algorithm (known to the students as Turtle Head Method). I'll also go over the Area Model as another way they can solve a multiplication problem. The 5th graders are expected to multiply 3 digit by 2 digit numbers using one of these two methods.

Students will have a fast fact multiplication sheet and an independent practice that'll be graded this week. They will also have homework in Canvas this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

This unit proves to be a difficult unit for 5th grade as we are getting into the multistep problem solving. It's important for students to take their time with their work, check their answers for reasonableness, and ASK QUESTIONS!

It's very important for 5th graders to continue their fast fact practice with all operations. This will really help them be successful in this unit.

Science & Social Studies

This week in SCIENCE, we will explore Food Chains and larger Food Webs. This expands our understanding of producers, consumers, and decomposers and their roles within an ecosystem.

DIORAMAS ARE DUE AND WILL BE PRESENTED THIS WEEK!!!

Students have had nearly an entire month in addition to class time to complete their projects.

This week in SOCIAL STUDIES, we will begin studying the 13 Original Colonies and students will explore them into three sections: the New England, middle, and southern colonies and the differences between the regions.

Reading/ Writing

This week we will return to our normal book club book schedule, with our book club meetings on Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure your child has read up to their number of pages and their jobs are complete for each meeting.

Students have been given a calendar of dates (posted in Canvas) that tells them how many pages they need to read for each book club meeting. This also tells them the job that they will have to do. The jobs are also posted in Canvas. **Students are always allowed to take their book home and read and work on their jobs at night**

Our 2nd book talk will be due Dec. 10. This book talk will be told from the main character's point of view. The rubric will be the same as last time, and is still posted in Canvas.

Students will have Poetry Week 7 due on Friday.

Our personal narrative writings are due this Friday. We will be revising, editing, and publishing our papers throughout the week.

Students will receive new spelling words Monday in class. They will need to complete their spelling activity (posted in canvas) by next Friday Oct. 29. Their spelling test will be next Thursday Oct. 28.
