This Week in 5th Grade!

February 7 - February 11, 2022

Math

We will begin Unit 5 over adding and subtracting positive rational numbers, estimation, and order of operations. I remember learning about PEMDAS back when I was in school, now that the TEKS have changed, I've changed the acronym to GEMDAS and the G stands for grouping symbols as we use parentheses AND brackets in 5th grade. We will start this week with learning about the order of operations and how to simplify expressions. Please have your child bring headphones to school this week!

Our homework for this week is to complete three missions in FRAX! There will be no homework in Canvas.

Science & Social Studies

This week in Science, we are continuing our study of Space Science, specifically the rotation of the Earth as well as patterns that impacts here on Earth.

Daily STEMScopes assignments continue this week.

In Social Studies, we are beginning an exciting new unit! We are moving away from the Revolution and have established our new government under the Constitution.

Now we will move into our study of the War of 1812, the Star-Spangled Banner, the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis & Clark, the expansion of the railroad and immigration, leading up through the Industrial Revolution. This is an exciting 4 week unit with lots of content!

Reading/ Writing

This week students will be reviewing skills in class, such as main idea/details, summary and inferences. We will then move into reviewing text structures that we find in texts that we read. We will wrap up the week with using a STAAR passage to review our skills for a grade.

Students received new spelling words last week. Their activities will be due this Thursday the 10th. Their spelling test will also be this Thursday the 10th.

Students will have NO more poetry.

Book Talk #3 will be due on Feb. 25th. This book talk will be told from a minor character's point of view.
