Math

This week in math we will begin our second to last unit over Geometry and Measurement. They will learn about the 5th Grade STAAR Reference Sheet and how to utilize it on a test/STAAR test. We will start the unit with a refresh of Area and Perimeter formulas for rectangles and squares and learn about finding the perimeter and area of irregular figures. They will be introduced to the Volume formula Volume = length x width x height and learn that we measure volume in cubic units.

The next concepts we will discuss will be Geometry which includes classifying quadrilaterals and triangles and all of the properties that make up these figures.

Science & Social Studies

This week in Science, we will wrap up our study of the forms of energy and begin our study of the properties of light! This includes lots of hands-on learning as we explore things like reflection and refraction!

Daily STEMScopes assignments continue this week.


In Social Studies, we have wrapped up our study of the American Civil War and the period of Reconstruction. We are now moving into all the major American historical events of the 1900s including major wars, notable historical movements, as well as several influential inventions and people. Our goal this week is to study right up until the 1st World War begins.

This is a 4 week unit!


Reading/ Writing

This week students will continue working on their book club book. We have 4 meetings left for this book club. Students will be responsible for different jobs that they need to complete and share with their book club group. The schedule of when their jobs are due is posted in canvas.

Students received new spelling words last week. Their activities will be due this Thursday the 31st. Their spelling test will also be this Thursday the 31st.

Students will have a STAAR review practice in Reading at least once every week until we have our STAAR . We will be reviewing our skills as well as our strategies.

Book Talk #4 is due Friday April 29th. This will be our final book talk of the year. This will be a "bag" book talk, which means that students will bring in 5 different items in a paper bag that are meaningful in their story. As they do the book talk, the students will pull out the items and share/ explain them.
