Valentine's Day Party

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Our party will take place on Friday, February 11. This year our Tigers will be able to exchange their Valentine cards with each other! Your child can bring his/her decorated valentine box to school beginning on Monday, February 7-11. Please make sure your child’s name is clearly visible on the front/top of the box. Our Tigers will be delivering their Valentines on February 11 prior to the class party. If your child is delivering valentines, please have him/her make a valentine for everyone in their homeroom. We do not want any hurt feelings on a "friend" holiday. A list of names will be coming home as we get closer to the event. Thank you! :)

Reading:

This week we have been working on the following:

  • learning strategies to use when reading text

  • We learned to annotate text to better our understanding of what we are reading by using L.A.T.C.H.

Label evidence

Add notes

Take your time

Cross out wrong choices

Highlight important information

Next week, we will:

  • continue to learn how to annotate text for comprehension using L.A.T.C.H.

  • Begin a whole-group novel study of The Cricket in Times Square. This is a great opportunity to review and analyze story elements. We will focus on compare/contrast characters and plot

  • Students will receive a new guided reading book and homework assignment that is due on Friday, January 28th. There is two sides to the homework assignment so I am giving them longer to complete it.

Math:

This week we have been working on the following

Division & Multiplication

  • We worked on Input and Output tables (also known as function tables)

  • We worked on both division and multiplication Math Facts

  • We used a new program called Reflex Math. It is a favorite already!

  • We solved one and two step word problems and used many of the strategies we've learned.

  • Next, week's focus will be:

  • Continuing working with word problems & using the UPS√ & CUBES strategies

  • Reviewing past & current skills on Education Galaxy.

  • Continue to work on math fluency with Splash Learn, MobyMax, & Reflex Math.

  • Homework will be due on January 21.

Science:

In science we are in our Forms of Energy unit.

Our Main Points to learn from this Unit:

  • Energy appears in different forms.

  • Energy is useful in our everyday lives.

  • Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can change from one form to another.

Grammar:

This week's focus phrase:

I can honor nationalities and languages by capitalizing them

Writing:

  • Students will work on a draft of their informational text

  • Students will continue to include text features such as Table of Contents, Glossary, Diagrams, Illustration with caption, etc. for their final informational writing.

Spelling:

Students will learn about suffixes -ful, -ness, -ly, -ing, -ed

We will spend this week learning practicing words with these suffixes

The spelling list will come home with your child on Monday, January 24th and can be found in your child's Reading Homework Folder (velcro pouch)
