Look, it's a plane! No, wait! It's a BIRD!

This week Pre-K students will learn all about birds. They will discover that birds have a backbone, a bill, feathers, and wings. Birds are creatures that lay eggs and they can be large or small. Students will explore the idea of birds being pets. They will also learn that a baby bird is called a chick. During our study of birds, students will learn about other characteristics that make some birds uniquely different. Be sure to strike up a conversation with your little one about birds and see what they are learning!

HELP! WE need...

This week we will be making bird watching "binoculars" to help us find birds on our nature walks. Please send in any toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes. Thank you so much for your help! We can't wait to go on our bird walk.

Literacy

This week we will focus on:

  • Rhyming words have the same middle and ending sounds.

  • A word web can organize information.

  • Recognizing common, frequently-used words builds foundational reading skills.

Math

This week we will focus on:

  • Capacity is measured by filling a container with standard units and describing how much it holds.

  • Weight is measured by comparing how heavy an object is to a standard unit.

  • A balance scale is a tool used to measure and compare weight.

Social/Emotional

This week we will focus on:

  • Identifying emotions of myself and others

  • Reviewing strategies on the "Conflict Resolution" wheel.

Kindergarten Writing Readiness

All through Pre-K we work hard on perfecting our "fine motor" skills. A big part of being ready to write is strengthening our hands, increasing our fine motor skills. Try this fun activity at home to help your child gain hand strength and increase their writing abilities.

This week's activity involves Play-doh, scissors and creativity! Provide your child with a tray (cookie sheets work great for this), some Play-doh, a pair of kid friendly scissors, and (child-friendly) cookie-cutters. Encourage your child to roll the doh and create shapes to practice cutting with scissors. Extension: encourage your child to organize the pieces they cut by size. Have fun!

Glue Sticks and Crayons

If you have the ability to send in glue sticks or coloring crayons we could use some for the end of the school year. Thanks so much for all the support! We greatly appreciate your kindness!

Repeated Information...

Pre-K Support Needed

Our classrooms are extra blessed when items on our wish lists appear. We have had some parents ask if we had an Amazon Wish List for our classrooms. We have linked our wish lists below for your consideration.

Thank you to those who have helped supply classroom needs. If you are able to help any teacher, we greatly appreciate your kindness.

Haynes' Teacher Wish List

Potter's Teacher Wish List

Your child needs the following items sent in their backpack, every day:

*a change of weather appropriate clothes in a ziploc bag

*a water bottle that they can manage without spilling

*2-3 healthy snack items (no items that require utensils, please)

*Daily Folder, signed each night

Daily Folders

Each school day, your child brings home their Daily Folder. Please make sure you are signing the GREAT Chart nightly and returning it to school on the following day. Your support and communication is very much appreciated. Thank you!

Dismissal Reminder:

If you find your child must go home a different way than planned, please notify the office by a phone call by at least 2:00 p.m. Teachers and our front office staff do not always have access to email or are busy teaching or helping others. A phone call is required. Sometimes we have only one person in the front office, so we want to provide ample time to be able to meet your needs.
