WINSTON CHURCHILL Artist Painter: Biography – Picture price guide – Google Gallery of paintings.

Winston Churchill (1874-1965), the famed statesman, was sacked from his role as First Lord of the Admiralty in May 1915, after the Gallipolli military disaster. Churchill was only 40 years old. Soon after this he has given a box of paints by a friend and started to take up painting as a hobby. This new pastime became a source of delight and a respite from the stress of his career pressures. He would eventually create a total of 550 paintings, crediting the practice with helping him to hone his visual acuity, powers of observation and memory. “Painting came to my rescue in a most trying time”, Churchill would write later in a small book that he published, entitled: Painting as a Pastime.

Winston Churchill’s paintings are now hugely valuable. For example, Goldfish Pool at Chartwell, painted in 1932, was sold at Sothebys in late 2014 for £1.8 million. Paradoxically, the last painting that Churchill ever painted was of the same Goldfish Pool. He painted it 1965 and gave it to his bodyguard Sergeant Edmund Murray, shortly before he died. Sergeant Murray had served Sir Winston faithfully for the last 15 years of his life and helped him prepare his easel and brushes before he painted.
