William Russell Flint (1880-1969) was born in Edinburgh in 1880 and his talent as an artist became evident very early on. He studied art at the Royal Institution School of Art in Edinburgh and then after an apprenticeship in the printing industry moved to London to become a medical illustrator. He was still only 20. In 1903, he joined the Illustrated London News and eventually became a freelance artist in 1907. Flint served in airships in World War I and then after the War his career really began to take off. He painted in Spain and France producing wonderful paintings reflecting the local scenery and culture. His skill in depicting the female form created a personal style which was to become legendary. Flint was elected to the Royal Academy in 1924 and knighted in 1947. He was honoured with a retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1962.
