Biography

John Frederick Herring Sr (1795-1865), the famed equestrian artist, was the son of a London merchant of Dutch parentage. Having moved to Doncaster in 1814 at the age of 18, he was employed as a painter of inn signs and insignia on the sides of coaches. But his talent soon became recognised by the gentry. With the help of these patrons he was able to study Art under Abraham Cooper. From 1841 onwards he became a popular painter of racehorses, creating images on canvas of all the greatest winners of the period. At the same time he also created charming small scale studies of rabbits, ducks, goats, birds and other animals, often in farmyard settings. Herring's work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, at the Society of British Artists of which he was a member, and also at the British Institution. One of the artist's sons, J. F. Herring Jnr, painted in a similar style to his father and also established an international reputation, especially with his farmyard scenes. JF Herring Senior's paintings are now highly collectable with prices typically in the range US$50-100,000 although one or two have sold for figures approaching US$1 million.
