ROWLAND HILDER: We are very pleased to offer this fine old Rowland Hilder print entitled "The Old Tidal Mill, Ardham". It is handsomely mounted, mahogany framed and glazed. Overall dimensions including the frame are 48.5 cm. by 38 cm. The image itself measures 34 cm. by 24 cm. The picture is unfaded and in near gallery condition. It is ready to hang. An old label on the reverse tells us that the picture was published by Royle Publications Limited in 1972. Price £29.50 including UK postage. (For overseas postage please request a quote. Rowland Hilder OBE (son of ROLAND HILDER, Rowland's name was misspelt on his birth certificate) was an English landscape and marine artist and book illustrator. He was born in New York in 1905 but his family returned to England in 1915 so that his father could enlist in the army to do his bit for the country in World War I. The family settled in Kent and Rowland subsequently studied Art at Goldsmiths College in South London. During his spare time he explored and sketched the highways and byways of Kent and the nearby River Thames.
One of Hilder's earliest commissions, in 1929, comprised book illustrations for the Oxford University's version of Treasure Island which won him the Times Illustrators Award. He was subsequently asked by Shell Mex Ltd. to illustrate their Travel Guide, the start of a long relationship with the company. In 1953, the publisher George Rainbird asked Hilder and his wife to undertake illustrations for the Shell "Flowers of the Countryside" series. Demand was so great that Shell had to set up a dedicated office to deal with correspondence and 13 million plates were published.
Rowland Hilder served as an army camouflage officer in World War II and subsequently served in the Ministry of Information. Hilder served as President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours from 1964 to 1974. He was awarded the OBE in 1986. The artist died in 1993.
Today, Rowland Hilder is particularly remembered for his masterly and instantly recognisable Kentish landscapes which are still hugely popular as framed art prints in many an English home.
