Mackenzie Thorpe: Artist & Sculptor – Biography - VIDEO: Artist at work

Mackenzie Thorpe was born in 1956 in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. The eldest of seven children, he first found work in the local shipbuilding industry. But in 1977, at the age of 21, he enrolled at the Cleveland College of Art and Design before going on to study for a Fine Art BA at Byam Shaw College of Art in London from where he graduated in 1982. Seven years later in 1989, he opened his Mackenzie Thorpe Gallery in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Thorpe also holds an honorary Master of Arts degree from Teesside University awarded in 2000.

Thorpe’s work has been described as combining tenderness with fervency through his abstract depictions of animals and children. Wikipedia describes his work as wide ranging, from square sheep and duffle coated boys to more challenging work focussing on isolation and man’s struggle.

Mackenzie Thorpe’s work has become hugely with the general public, particularly his original artworks as well as his limited edition prints. So, while his prints are available from around £50 - £250, his originals including pastels and small sculptures readily fetch up to £8,250 or more.

The artist now lives and works in Brighton.
