JOHN PIPER Painter & Printmaker: Biography - Auction prices - Gallery of Artworks

John Egerton Christmas Piper OM (1903-1992) was an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained glass windows and both theatre and opera sets. His work covered a wide range, from tapestry designs, book jackets, screen prints and lithographs to oil paintings and watercolours as well as fabrics and ceramics.

Piper was educated at Epsom College and trained at the Richmond Art School, followed by the Royal College of Art in London. He was an official war artist in World War II and his depictions of bomb damaged buildings, particularly Coventry Cathedral, made Piper a household name. He collaborated with John Betjeman and Geoffrey Grigson on the Shell Guides and with the potter Geoffrey Eastop and the artist Ben Nicholson.

John Piper's output of art during his lifetime was huge and this is reflected in an equally huge body of auction sales across the range of art that he produced. A very broad classification of his auction prices in recent years can be summarised as follows: Screenprints: US$500-1,500, Lithographs: US$1,500-5,000, Pencil & Ink sketches: US$5,000-20,000, Oil paintings and watercolours: US$20,000-60,000.
