Lucy Harwood Artist: Biography - Gallery of Art for Sale

Lucy Harwood was born at Belstead Park near Ipswich in 1893, the daughter of a wealthy local landowner. She originally planned to become a musician but a botched operation when she was very young left her partially paralysed on her right hand side. This prompted her to switch to pursuing a career as an artist. The event undoubtedly contributed to the flamboyant style by which we remember her today. She received her early artistic training at the Slade School of Fine Art prior to World War I. Later, from 1937 onwards, she attended the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing established by Cedric Morris at Dedham, Essex. Her fellow pupils included Lucien Freud, the latter subsequently causing the School to close after he accidentally set fire to it.

A member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1946-1948, the artist had her first solo exhibition at The Minories, Colchester in 1975 and had further shows at Sally Hunter Fine Art. She died in Ipswich in 1972. Galleries currently offering her work include Felix & Spear of London, Louise Kosnan of East Lothian and Freya Mitton of Somerset. Her work is also featured on the ART UK website, covering British Art in publicly owned collections.
