Vernon Ward, full name Vernon Beauvoir Ward, was born in Hampstead, London in 1905, the son of an art dealer and cousin to John Stanton. He studied at the Slade School of Art in London under Henry Tonks, Wilson Steer and Sir Walter Russell. Vernon Ward was a member of the New Society of Artists and was elected an associate of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1926 and exhibited frequently at the Royal Society and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. His work found particular favour with the general public as art prints, often depicting flower arrangements, scenes from nature including swans, ducks in flight, deer in woodland etc as well as pictures of picturesque coastal and harbour scenes. These prints are still widely collected today and also still appear as greetings cards and even jigsaw puzzles. He designed a symbolic figure composition for the Free French during World War II and the Borough of Twickenham commissioned him to design a naval war memorial. He occasionally produced works under the pseudonym Bertram Linder. Vernon Ward died in 1985.
