Margaret Graeme Niven. Quintessentially English artist and painter, particularly of landscapes and flowers (1906-1997).
Margaret Niven is best known for her enchanting paintings of landscapes and flowers. She was born at Marlow in 1906, the daughter of the artist and engraver William Niven. She studied at the Winchester School of Art, at Heatherley's and under Bernard Adams. She exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. She was elected to the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers in 1932 and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1936. Her work is to be found in many collections including the Government Art Collection (especially gracing our overseas embassies), Homerton College, Cambridge and Bradford City Art Gallery.She lived for many years at Wormley in Surrey.
Margaret Niven's work always does well at auction, typically selling for several hundred pounds or more. Her painting "The Discovery" actually fetched £2,150 when it was auctioned by Phillips in 2001.
