Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-1979) was an internationally renowned painter of British birds and other wildlife. He was born in Macclesfield but spent most of his working life on the Isle of Anglesey. He began his artistic training in 1916 at the Macclesfield School of Art and subsequently won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. During his lifetime he worked in several media including watercolour, etching, aquatints, wood engraving and oils. Much of his work depicted birds in their natural settings and this work is probably his greatest legacy. But he also depicted animals and illustrated a number of books including Tarka the Otter and some of the Ladybird books. His work was always characterised by its precision and accuracy. As his reputation grew, he was made an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1944 and a Fellow in 1954. He received the RSPB Gold Medal and was appointed OBE in 1978. On his death in 1979, much of his personal collection of work was bequeathed to Anglesey Council which is now on display at the Anglesey Gallery near Llangefni.
