Sarah Spackman was born at Reading in Berkshire in 1958. She studied initially at the Byam Shaw School of Art, 1977-78, and then at Camberwell School of Art 1978-81. She held her first solo exhibition in 1982 at the Henley Exhibition Centre. In 1986 she received the Winsor & Newton Young Artist Award. and travelled extensively in Italy. She became a full time artist in the same year. She is listed in the Dictionary of British Art 20th Century Painters and Sculptors The subjects of her paintings are usually taken from objects, people and places she comes into contact with in her daily life and she is famous for then portraying them in successive angular nodes of bright colour. (This particular Still Life painting is a great example of this.) As well as her original oil paintings, prints of her work are enduringly popular. Sarah Spackman works from a bright airy studio at Kirtlington on the outskirts of Oxford.
