J. STEWART Artist Illustrator for Goldsmith History of the Earth. Biography - Prints for sale

J. Stewart is best remembered today as the artist/illustrator for the highly successful multi-volume publication authored by Oliver Goldsmith and entitled: “A History of the Earth and animated Nature”, published by Blackie and Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London, which ran to several editions from the late 1860s onwards. J. Stewart produced many beautiful illustrations for Goldsmith’s monumental work which were subsequently engraved by J. Bishop and hand coloured. This prolific series of illustrations covered most of the creatures of the Natural World known at the time including birds, animals, fish etc. and these illustrations are now highly collectable as separate prints. Not much more is known about J. Stewart himself.

1. Rare Oliver Goldsmith Blackie & Son coloured print of lions, tiger, leopard & jaguar: 1868. Unframed.

We are very proud to offer you this fine antique animal engraving from “Earth and Animated Nature” by Oliver Goldsmith, published by Blackie & Son, Glasgow, Edinburgh and London in 1868. It depicts a group of large carnivores as a dramatic group, including a lion and lioness, a bengal tiger, a leopard and a jaguar.

This beautiful print is hand coloured and the colours remain almost as bright as when first first applied almost 150 years ago.

These prints are much sought after and on the rare occasions that they come on to the market they usually fetch high prices.

This superb engraving is printed on a sheet measuring 25 cm. by 17 cm. The image itself measures approximately 20 cm. by 12.7 cm. At top right the image is labelled PLATE 39.. At bottom left below the image, the engraving is labelled J. Stewart Del (who drew the image) and below right it is labelled J. Miller (the engraver). The main title to the engraving, centred below the image reads: 1. ASIATIC LION 2. LIONESS 3. BENGAL TIGER 4. LEOPARD 5. JAGUAR. Below the main title, the text reads: Blackie & Son, Glasgow, Edinburgh & London.

The general condition of the engraving is very good with no colour fading and no foxing.
