William F Piper: Cornish Marine Artist Painter - Biography - Gallery of paintings - Auction prices

William F. Piper was born in Newquay, Cornwall in about 1900 and showed outstanding artistic talent from a very early age.He was to use this to capture on canvas many outstanding views of the Cornish coastline. In fact, these seascapes and marine views were to become his life's work. The artist became well known in Newquay and was President of the Art Society of Newquay for many years. But an important event in his career occurred in 1950 which meant he needed to spend more time in St. Ives. That year he became a member of the prestigious and influential St. Ives Society of Artists (STISA), founded in the town in 1927. In 1950, just one year after he joined, works by William Piper were included in the STISA Festival of Britain touring art show, almost certainly selected for their quintessentially English character. He subsequently held further exhibitions of his paintings in St. Ives itself, particularly at Lanham's Gallery. Many of his works were purchased for public collections. The artist died in 1967.
