Helen Bradley MBE was born Helen Layfield in a small village just outside Oldham in 1900. She began her art education at 13 by winning the John Platt scholarship to Oldham in 1913. It was only the outbreak of War in 1914 which prevented her continuing her art studies. She was only to resume painting in her sixties, initially as a means of showing her grandchildren how the World had changed since she was a child. She was encouraged in this by the famous painter L.S. L*wry. In due course, she developed her own unique naïve/primitive style.

Helen Bradley's big break came in 1971 with the publication by Jonathan Cape of the first of four books "And Miss Carter wore pink" illustrated with her own naïve paintings. It was an instant success and the illustrations were also sold separately as signed Limited Edition prints - again to wide acclaim. In total she published 30 signed Limited Edition prints, 3 unsigned Limited Edition prints and 11 Open Edition prints.

As her fame grew, the artist became a firm media favourite, appearing on radio and TV shows such as Pebble Mill, the Russell Harty Show and Desert Island Discs. And both the BBC and the American NBC Network made documentaries of her life.

Mostly, at auction, Helen Bradley's signed Limited Edition prints are seen and fetch prices up to around US$150-250. Her original paintings, however, are seen at auction much less frequently but, when they do, always cause a big stir, Prices of her original paintings have been known to fetch US$170,000 or more.

The artist died in 1979, shortly before she was due to receive the MBE from Her Majesty the Queen.
