J W McINTYRE Artist - Biography - Auction prices

Joseph Wrighton McIntyre (1841-1897) was a Victorian painter of coastal scenes, seascapes, especially stormy scenes as well as interior scenes in, for example, smithies, coopers' workshops, bellow makers' premises etc.

Wrighton exhibited at the Royal Academy during the period 1871 to 1888 as well as at the British Institution (a rival to the Royal Academy) during 1806-1867 and the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street. The artist usually signed his work as J.W. McIntyre, followed by the date, for example J.W. McIntyre/1877.

Recent auction prices for Joseph McIntyre typically range from around US$1,000 to US$5,000. However, prices have been erratic. While "Bellows to Mend" fetched no less than US$14,000, a rather similar painting in style, "A Cooper's Workshop" was put up for auction in October 2011 but failed to sell, possibly because it did not reach its reserve.
