ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Charles Edmund Brock RI was born on 5th February 1870 in Holloway, London. He was the eldest of four brothers, all destined to become artists, including Henry Matthew Brock. The family later settled in Cambridge where the brothers maintained a studio filled with antiques, furniture, and a costume collection. Charles studied art briefly under Cambridge sculptor Henry Wiles. He got his first book illustrating commission at the age of 20 in 1890. He subsequently became a very successful illustrator of books by authors such as Jonathan Swift, William Thackeray, Jane Austen and George Eliot. He became particularly known for his line drawings, initially working in the tradition of Hugh Thomson. But the artist also developed a highly successful parallel career as a painter, especially of portraits. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1897-1906 and also at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI). He was elected a member of the RI in 1908. He was subsequently to become a very important Society portrait painter, undertaking commissions for the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, Winston Churchill and most importantly for the Duke and Duchess of York (subsequently King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) who engaged him to undertake a number of family portraits, especially of their children, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose. His most famous and important Royal portrait - of Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose with their mother, was executed in 1936 and sold recently at auction for nearly £100,000. The artist died on 28 February 1938. More about Edmund Brock on Wikipedia.
