Biography

GERALD M. BURN (1862-1945) was a painter in oils and watercolour. He was born in London and received his art education at South Kensington and also in Cologne, Dusseldorf, Antwerp and Paris. He exhibited from 1881 onwards at the main London galleries including the Royal Academy. He established a particular reputation for his depictions of of battleships especially in the period at the end of the 19th Century as these great ships made the transition from sail to steam. Paintings by the artist do well at auction, with his watercolours, often of landscapes, typically fetching around US$200 and his oils up to US$1,700.
