Walter Thomas: Maritime artist: Biography - Auction prices - Gallery of paintings on Google

WALTER THOMAS RI, R Cam A (1894-1962): The artist first studied at Liverpool College of Art during 1912 and 1913 and later in London between 1913 and 1915. He focussed mostly on maritime subjects, making posters, pen & ink drawings and watercolour studies of ships and harbours. During 1913/1915 he exhibited some of his work at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. But his big break to fame and fortune came with commissions from the Cunard White Star Line who appointed him to paint marine portraits of their great ocean liners that plied the North Atlantic route in the first half of the Twentieth Century. These paintings were used particularly to create spectacular posters to attract wealthy customers wishing to travel between Europe and New York. These posters are now highly collectable. He also created memorable travel posters for other clients. Thomas in due course became a member of the prestigious Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal Cambrian Academy. The artist retired to Kirk Michael in the Isle of Man and died in 1962.
