D'OYLY JOHN Artist Painter: Biography - Paintings for Sale

Cecil Rochford D’Oyly John (1906-1993) was a South African painter best known for his brightly coloured landscapes typically depicting scenes in the South of France and the Mediterranean. The artist grew up in Durban, South Africa and in his early years travelled the world having many different jobs such as a police officer and oil company employee. Having finally settled in England, he started to paint whilst recovering from a wound sustained in World War II, encouraged by his friend and art teacher Edmund Fearnley-Whittingstall. He later picked up more tips from the Nice artist Paul Negeli but was otherwise self taught.

A particular turning point for the artist was a solo exhibition he held in Bognor Regis in 1963, when he sold his work to art dealers from around the world including Stacy-Marks, Aldridges and Frost & Reed. It is said that the artist was not above claiming to be an illegitimate son of August John to promote his work although there is no way of confirming this.

In recent years, D’oyly John’s instantly recognisable sun drenched landscapes have become enduringly popular both as originals and prints. His work is featured in several public collections and it is known that HM Queen Elizabeth II owns several of his paintings.

The artist finally settled in Rottingdean, UK and died there in 1993. He is buried in St. Margaret’s churchyard there.
