DION PEARS was actually the grandson of the famous marine artist Charles Pears ROI (1873-1958) who was an official naval artist in both World Wars and whose work is extensively represented in the Imperial War Museum. Dion himself established his own reputation early on in the World of Speed, first with a series of train posters commissioned by the Great Western Railway and then with dramatic depictions of racing cars (especially his great love - Formula One) and aircraft. Interestingly, it was only late in life that Dion took up marine art in the footsteps of his grandfather..

Dion Pears was undoubtedly a "character". His relatives recall that in old age he became increasingly reluctant to leave the house but demand for his paintings of fast cars remained as strong as ever. The problem was solved neatly. Dion first created a suitable background scene from specially taken photographs. Then the car was brought round and parked outside his studio window in a suitable pose - to be painted straight into the picture! The artist died in 1968.
