John Caesar Smith was born in Peterborough in 1930, the son of a brickyard worker, and attended the local Grammar School. From these early beginnings he has risen to being one of the UK's leading landscape artists. He was brought up in the Fenlands of East Anglia and this expresses itself in his many delightful paintings of the region. These often feature capture the magnificent elms that once grew in profusion in that part of England, so that Caesar Smith's work, like John Constable before him, captures the glorious English landscape that once was. John Caesar Smith's son Nicholas is also a painter.
