William Gaunt Artist Historian: Biography - Auction values - Google images - Wikipedia
William Gaunt (1900-1980) was an art historian and artist. He was the author of a large number of well considered books on Art including the ever popular "Observer's Book of Painting and Graphic Art".
After graduating from Worcester College, Gaunt studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing. He completed an MA in 1926 and, shortly after, published a collection of drwings entitled "London Promenade".
Gaunt was instrumental in reviving interest in the Pre-Raphaelites who had fallen seriously out of fashion. He rekindled interest with his book, published in 1942, entitled: "The Pre-Raphaelite Tragedy".
William Gaunt and his wife Mary Catherine Reilly Connolly, whom he had married in 1935, lived latterly at a dreamy country cottage on the Surrey Hampshire border.
William Gaunt's work is still popular at auction with prices up to around US$2,500.
