GEORGE DEAKINS Artist: Biography
George Deakins (1911-1981) began painting to relieve boredom whilst serving in the Royal Navy in World War II. His first sale was made from an art exhibition held at the Scottish Royal Academy in the 1940s. Subsequently, he exhibited his work at exhibitions all over the World, including many one man shows in London and Paris. After retiring from the Royal Navy he settled in the picturesque village of Dunster in Somerset where he opened his own studio. The artist was the subject of a TV documentary in the 1970s.
(The artist David Deakins is the son of George Deakins and paints in a very similar style. He has also carried on the family tradition in opening a studio/gallery in Dunster.)
