Johan Acton Butt was a Birmingham artist who specialised in capturing the beauty of rural landscapes, especially of North Wales, within tolerably easy reach of his home in the Midlands. He was most active in the period 1883 to 1891 and exhibited his work widely.

Johan Acton Butt’s paintings are now highly collectable and fetch high prices at auction. For example, a similar painting by the artist, entitled Nafford on Avon, recently fetched US$978, approximately 500 Pounds Sterling, at an auction held by Christies in London..
