Introduction

As a potential buyer of Rowland Hilder’s art, first decide what you are looking for. You basically have 3 categories of his artworks to investigate in ascending order of cost: Open edition prints, Limited Edition prints and finally Original paintings. These are reviewed in turn below.

1. Rowland Hilder open edition prints.

Open edition prints are mass produced prints from Rowland Hilder original paintings. They are not generally pencil signed and/or numbered by the artist but are nevertheless very decorative and can often be purchased ready framed. The most collectable of the artist’s open edition prints were published in the 1960s, 70s and 80s so have some age to them. But they can still often be acquired for very little money, especially if in good condition without too much colour fading. The next consideration is rarity. This will seriously affect the asking price. There is really only one way to gauge the rarity of his open edition prints and that is to browse sources and the best way to start is to browse Ebay. When browsing, Ebay to get a realistic appreciation of the market set the button in the left hand column to “Show only Sold items”. At top right, put the setting to “Highest price”. It will be seen that his framed Open Edition prints sell on Ebay for around £25-50.

There is another category of his Open Edition prints to be aware of and that is prints that are basically still “in production”. These, of course, will look really bright and fresh and are often supplied framed or with a number of framing options to the buyer’s own taste. The major source of newly minted or nearly newly minted Rowland Hilder mints is Amazon. Amazon currently offer a range of nearly 25 Hilder open edition prints and typically most are framed. Prices are mostly around the £35 mark.

Travelling Art Gallery has a fascinating collection of Rowland Hilder open edition prints for sale at around £22.00 each. They also offer framing for an additional £25 or so. These images (characteristically oblong) were originally created for display in the old railway carriage compartments, just below the luggage rack.

2. Rowland Hilder Limited Edition prints.

Limited Edition prints are print runs limited to a specific number of copies, say 300 or 750. Typically, each copy is pencil signed by the artist at bottom right and the number of the copy entered in pencil at bottom left, say 55/750, signifying that the copy is Number 55 of a print run limited to a total of 750 copies. These Limited Editions are popular with Collectors, especially when pencil signed by the artist. Collectors feel they are getting something of significantly better value than an open edition where there is no limit to the number of copies that can be run off the press. Some Limited Editions continue to be issued after an Artist’s death, possibly as an enhanced print quality Giclee version but, of course, in such cases the prints are still numbered but not signed by the artist.

Rowland Hilder Limited Edition prints typically fetch around £150-500 to reflect their enhanced value to collectors. And again, rarer versions can fetch considerably more.
