LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY RBA RA (1887-1976) was an English artist who became famous for his scenes of life in the industial North West of England in the mid 20th century. He is best known for his urban landscapes peopled by somewhat skeletal figures who quickly became known as "matchstick men". A fine collection of his work is on permanent display at the The Lowry, a purpose built art gallery on Salford Quays. In June 2013, a major retrospective of his work opened at the Tate Britain in London. The artist always rejected offers of honours, including that of a knighthood offered in 1968. Lowry's work, including original paintings and prints, remains hugely popular. The artist never married.
