James Brereton is a UK artist specialising in marine painting. His paintings show a meticulous attention to detail in his portrayal of sailing ships and boats, often alongside beautiful seascapes and sunsets.

James Brereton was born in Derby in 1954 and studied at the Joseph Wright School in Derby before turning professional in 1979. He works mainly in oils and specialises in marine subjects, particularly ships of the nineteenth century. His work has been influenced by artists such as Montague Dawson, Thomas Somerscales and Charles Dixon. His other works include coastal scenes, still life, townscapes, figurative and some landscape. His work is recorded and illustrated in Denys Brook-Hart’s book “20th Century British Marine Painting” and E.H.H. Archibald’s “Dictionary of Sea Painters of Europe and America”. He has exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London and the West End, as well as many galleries throughout the UK. His pictures are to be found in private collections in the UK. Eire, Belgium, Oman, Japan and the USA. His work has been frequently sold through Sotheby’s and Christies, both in London and New York.
