FREDERICK J ALDRIDGE Artist Painter: Biography

Frederick James Aldridge was born in Worthing, Sussex in 1850 and spent his whole life there, including for a time running Aldridges Art Gallery in the town. His life by the sea greatly influenced his work and he became famed for his watercolours of marine subjects in a style which is instantly recognisable. He particularly featured big sails in his work and was a regular visitor to the annual yachting event “Cowes Week” on the Isle of Wight for over fifty years. The artist eventually established an international reputation and between 1880 and 1901 exhibited at all the major London and provincial galleries as well as the Royal Academy. F.J. Aldridge died in March 1933 aged 80 and his life and work was commemorated in a fulsome obituary in The Times later that month.
