DAVID BIRCH Landscape artist: Biography - Paintings for sale

DAVID BIRCH ROI (full name William Henry David Birch) 1895-1968. The artist was born in Epsom, Surrey on May 19th 1895. He studied at Epsom School of Art and at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art. He was invalided out of World War I in 1915 and continued his art training while working for HM Stationery Office for 3 years. He took up book illustration and later became a part time art teacher in London. In 1930 he took over as Principal of Epsom and Ewell School of Art from the first principal William Henry Osmond whom he had studied under in the years before the Great War. David Birch remained as Principal for over 30 years, finally stepping down only in 1961. (The prestigious art school is now UCA Epsom – the University of the Creative Arts – and continues to thrive.) From 1935 he made a special study of landscape painting in the Constable tradition but it was not until 1937 that he began to exhibit regularly at the Royal Academy and other leading galleries. He was elected to membership of the ROI (Royal Institute of Oil Painters) in 1945. He lived in Epsom for many years and he died on March 10th 1968. The artist is now particularly remembered for his wonderful English landscapes, very much in the Constable tradition. He usually signed his work “David Birch”. (With acknowledgement also to Grant M. Waters: Dictionary of British Artists 1900-1950.)
