BARRY CASTLE Irish Artist: Biography - Where to view her paintings - Auction prices

Barry Castle (Irish) 1935 – 2008.

Barry Castle studied at the National College of Art in her native Dublin, where tutors included Sean Keating, Maurice MacGonigal and John Kelly. She exhibited with the Solomon Gallery in Dublin and a major retrospective of her work was held in the RHA in 1998.

The daughter of novelist and playwright Maura Laverty and wife of illustrator Philip Castle, she illustrated many of her mother’s children’s books. In 1985, David Shaw-Smith and RTE made a documentary on the life and work of Philip and Barry Castle entitled: “Life Without Shadows”.

BARRY Castle’s work can be found in such collections as the National Library of Ireland, the National Self-Portrait Collection in Limerick, University of Limerick, AIB and the Arts Council.

The artist is now particularly remembered for her vivid, often mischievous, allegorical fantasies, featuring animal and human characters in stylised often bucolic settings.
