CHARLES A. BOOL Artist: Biography and Paintings for Sale

FOR SALE

CHARLES A BOOL: Signed watercolour: Swallow Falls 0n River Llugwy/Conway N Wales 1899

Original Authentic: Part mounted but unframed: Highly collectable

Here is a superb, authentic and original watercolour painting by British artist Charles A. Bool, painted in about 1899. It is believed to depict the Swallow Falls on the River Llugwy, a tributary of the River Conwy in North Wales, or a similar Falls nearby about 3 miles from Bettwys-y-Coed. It is one of Snowdonia's most visited sites, just as it was in the Victorian era when this lovely picture was painted. It has been executed in watercolour heightened with body colour and is signed by the artist at bottom centre (see signature close-up below).

Charles A Bool's work is now increasingly sought after in the Sale Room and the rediscovery of his art is leading to a surge in the prices being achieved for his paintings, up to US$1,131 or more. And a pair of similar watercolours by the artist sold for US$2,439 at Shrewsbury, UK. Click this link for recent auction prices for Charles A. Bool.

This charming watercolour measures approximately 37.5 cm. by 41.5 cm. and is in excellent condition. It is signed by the artist and mounted within a gold fillet which is also in excellent condition. The painting is then in turn mounted within a wider mount measuring 53 cm. by 41.5 cm. Please note that this wider secondary mount which is clearly original and therefore over 110 years old, is in generally poor condition, with surface flaking and bruising round the edges. However, we are advised that the successful bidder can readily have a new mount cut and overlaid on the existing one for a cost no more than a few pounds. Please note also that the painting is unframed. leading to substantially reduced postal costs and no risk of broken glass in transit.

Charles A. Bool was a highly accomplished artist, working in both oils and watercolour at the end of the Victorian era and into the first few years of the Edwardian period. His favourite subjects were waterfalls and rushing rocky streams, especially in North Wales on the rivers Conwy, Llugwy (a tributary of the Conwy) and the Cayne. But he also captured wonderful images in the Lake District, particularly of Ullswater and Rydal Water. In addition, he painted some pleasing Scottish loch scenes and coastal scenes, including views of Kent and the Isle of Wight. In an interesting way, the artist anticipated the later trend towards limited edition prints since his paintings were widely reproduced as postcards by publishers J. Salmon Ltd. who are still trading today. These postcards, in turn, are now very collectable. Charles A. Bool's son Alfred H. Bool was also a talented artist. After a period of being treated as a relative unknown, Charles A. Bool's work is now being re-evaluated by the market, with a strong resurgence of interest.
