Beast Youkai are the forms of animals that have gained supernatural power in some way. Some have lived a long time, extending their lives far beyond their natural life span. At other times, they may have eaten a powerful human, such as a hermit, and gain power from doing so.
Whatever the cause, Beast Youkai are sentient creatures, some of which can be quite cunning. Typically, they are simply more powerful versions of their base form, but some have managed to attain magical powers. Additionally, they can be difficult to get rid of for a typical exorcist, as they are more resistant to spiritual attacks than a normal Youkai, and must usually be defeated in a fight. As they are well suited to fighting, this can make them formidable opponents.
They are distinct from Youkai who possess animal-like features, such as Mermaids, Tengu, Kappa or Tanuki.
