sweet and sour sauce

This is an easy homemade sweet and sour sauce. You don't need to buy anything exotic and the preparation is simple. The recipe yields 1 cup and can be halved or frozen, as that's a lot of sweet and sour sauce. When I made it I had no tabasco sauce but it still tasted fine.

  • 2 tbsp ketchup

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • 4 tbsp red wine vinegar

  • 4 tbsp sugar

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 C water

  • 2 tsp cornstarch

  • 1/2 tsp tabasco sauce

1. Mix the vinegar, sugar, salt, water, cornstarch, and tabasco sauce. A wire whip or mixer is best suited for this. Set the mixture aside.

2. Combine the oil and ketchup in a pot over medium-high heat. Bring the oil and ketchup to a boil stirring constantly.

3. Add the vinegar mixture to the ketchup and oil.

4. Cook the sweet and sour sauce, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.

5. Remove the sweet and sour sauce from the heat. Pour the mixture into the desired container/s, and allow to cool. The sauce can be served cool or hot.
