chinese casserole

This kind of recipe was popular with housewives in the '70s. The ingredients were predominantly canned and preserved as the fresh preservative free food trend had not yet caught on. My mother used canned bean sprouts. There was a lesser variety of vegetables available at the grocery store back then. Bean sprouts may not have been easily found. The ground round is 90% lean hamburger.

  • 1 lb ground round

  • 1 yellow onion

  • 1 C bean sprouts

  • 1 C chopped celery

  • 1 can mushroom soup

  • 1 can sliced water chestnuts

  • sack of potato chips

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. Prepare the vegetables. Chop the onion. Rinse and chop the celery. Rinse the bean sprouts. Crush the potato chips.

3. Put the chopped onion and ground round in a fry pan, and brown the meat. Make sure the chopped onion cooks to translucence.

4. Put the meat and onion in a casserole dish. Add the bean sprouts and the chopped celery. Add the can of mushroom soup and the sliced water chestnuts. Mix it all together.

5. Put some crushed potato chips on top of the casserole.

6. Bake the casserole for 45 minutes.
