Indian fried bread is also known as frybread and bannock. Fried bread is derived from Native American cuisine. It can be served as a sweet or a savory dish, with toppings ranging from honey to cheese. Indian bread is also called an Indian taco when served with ingredients similar to tacos.

  • 2 C flour

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 2/3 to 3/4 C milk

  • 3 tsp baking powder

  • 2 tbsp lard or oil

1. Mix the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a bowl.

2. Add the milk and lard/oil and mix well

3. Flour a flat surface. Put the dough on the floured surface. Pat the dough out until it is approximately 1/2 inch thick.

4. Put approximately 1/2 inch of oil in a frying pan and heat over medium-high heat.

5. Fry the bread in the oil until both sides are brown. Serve the bread warm.
